Normandy Optical is proud to offer the first and only FDA-approved IPL eye treatment to residents of Rochester Hills for dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) eye treatment is a safe and non-invasive medical procedure that uses laser therapy to treat various eye conditions. It is most commonly used to treat dry eye disease, ocular rosacea, MGD, and other eyelid conditions.
IPL is the only IPL treatment that is FDA-approved specifically for controlling dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. The laser used in the treatment utilizes broad-spectrum light to stimulate glands that produce natural lubricants, providing long-lasting relief from dryness. It reduces inflammation and promotes healing in the affected eye(s).
Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye disease is a common chronic condition that can cause redness, itching, and other symptoms caused by abnormal tear production.
Do you suffer from dry eye disease? Some common symptoms include:
Scratchy sensation
Itchiness and/or burning sensation
Redness
Excessive eye watering
Heightened sensitivity and irritation due to wind and smoke
Discomfort while wearing contact lenses
Fluctuating vision
It is essential to discuss potential risks, benefits, and any specific concerns with a qualified medical professional before undergoing IPL treatment. If you believe you are experiencing any dry eye symptoms, please schedule an eye exam with an optometrist at one of our Normandy Optical locations. In this eye exam, we evaluate each patient to determine if they are a candidate for this advanced therapy.
What Does IPL Eye Treatment Look Like?
IPL eye treatments are typically performed in a series of sessions, each lasting around fifteen minutes. Patients usually have about four treatment sessions over the course of two to four months. However, the number of sessions required can vary depending on the specific condition and the individual's response to the treatment. IPL Eye Treatment Procedure During treatment, the patient sits or lies down comfortably during the procedure, and protective goggles may be provided to shield the eyes from the intense light. After a conductive gel is applied beneath the eyelid area, a handheld device delivers pulses of broad-spectrum light to the targeted area.
An experienced optometrist delivers a series of laser pulses. The procedure is done in-office and takes less than 30 minutes. After, there may be some minor redness around the treated area, which usually resolves within hours after the treatment.
The light energy is absorbed by specific targets in the skin, such as pigment (melanin) or blood vessels, depending on the purpose of the treatment. The absorbed energy converts into heat, selectively damaging the targeted tissue while leaving surrounding healthy tissue unaffected.
What to Expect Post-Treatment
After your IPL treatment, you may experience some redness, swelling, mild discomfort, and darkening/lightening of the affected area. These side effects are normal reactions and should subside within a few days. Additionally, you may experience some dryness and discomfort for several weeks following your treatment.
Our Normandy Optical Rochester Hills optometrists provide comprehensive post-treatment care to ensure patients get the best possible results from their IPL eye treatments and achieve optimal recovery. Our optometrists can offer customized guidelines to help manage discomfort and reduce infection risk or other complications.
When Will I See Results?
Results of IPL eye therapy are typically seen after two to three treatments. Patients typically respond best when treatments are performed on a regular schedule, as directed by the eye doctor. Normandy Optical in Rochester Hills Offers IPL Eye Therapy
